AP+E is a design and research studio based in the Netherlands and in Ireland. The practice works and collaborates internationally on a wide range of projects with an agenda to strengthen the relevance of architecture as a social enterprise and create spaces that stimulate new forms of community and interaction.
The work of AP+E has been widely published and exhibited internationally, including the Design Museum London, Tallinn Architecture Biennale, Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale where they designed the inaugural Irish National pavilion.
Current projects of the office include a new education and exhibition space for the Natural History Museum and the initial assignment for the new Ibsen Library in Skien, Norway.
Jeffrey is a studio tutor at the Faculty of Architecture & Built Environment TU Delft and together with Laurence Lord he runs the graduate studio at the Cork Centre for Architectural Education. He has been and invited as a guest critic to a number of schools and institutions including the academies of architecture in Amsterdam and Rotterdam in the Netherlands along with HKU in the Hong Kong.

Jo Anne is co-founder of Culturstruction with Tara Kennedy. Jo Anne was a co-founder of ‘Commonage Summer School’ (2011,12,13) an innovative ten-day programme of design and build workshops, talks, field trips and film screenings exploring the role of design in rural futures, situated in the small town of Callan, Co.Kilkenny.
Jo Anne grew up in the town of Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo and has recently returned to small town life in the west of Ireland. She is preparing to open a shop/design studio and ‘live above the shop’ with her young family.
Miriam is an architect and lecturer at the Dublin School of Architecture, Dublin Institute of Technology, teaching Architectural Design, Technology and History Theory & Criticism. She has previously taught in University College Dublin and Queens University Belfast, and has been an invited guest critic in many Irish and UK schools of architecture. Miriam is from the rural market town of Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, and her interest in the histories, urbans morphologies, and representation of small Irish towns has dominated her professional and academic career.
Miriam studied at University College Dublin, practiced in Dublin and Zurich, she completed an MA Architectural History at the Bartlett, UCL where her research focussed on Ulster plantation towns. She has led student dissertation groups in DIT on the subject of planned Irish towns, and published this work as ‘Mapped: a study of the planned villages of Ireland’. In 2011, she co-authored ‘Studio Craft and Technique for Architects’ a best selling student handbook. In collaboration with AP+E, Miriam won first prize in RIAI research competition ‘3Twenty10’ for their project ‘Remapping the Midlands’, which focussed on the impact on small midland towns of an expanding motorway network.

As the curator of Beyond Participation, an international conference by the Irish Architecture Foundation, Tara provokes discussion about architecture, community, and the meaning of the things we design. Tara is a co-founder of Culturstruction with Jo Anne Butler. Tara was a co-founder of ‘Commonage Summer School’ (2011,12,13) an innovative ten-day programme of design and build workshops, talks, field trips and film screenings exploring the role of design in rural futures, situated in the small town of Callan, Co.Kilkenny.
Tara was born in and currently lives in Dublin. Her partner is from the town of Bantry, Co. Cork and they are preparing to move out of the city with their young family. Tara is interested in how her collaborative design practice might contribute to, and learn from, a small town context.

Architect, founder of Custom and Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture, Environmental Policy in University College Dublin, Orla moved with her family to the town of Westport Co. Mayo in 2004. Her interest in the urban form and culture of rural towns was sparked by the move and she and her husband Dermot McCabe were appointed Architects in Residence in Cavan town in 2007. The residency concluded with an exhibition and book, Atlas of Cavan.
Orla was the recipient of the Kevin Kieran Award in 2009, which supported her research in practice on the Irish rural town. She published Town: Origins, Morphology and Future in 2012 and directed a produced an award winning animated short documentary film entitled Town with Orla McHardy in the same year.
In her practice and teaching Orla continues to focus on research and public engagement connected with the built environment - she coordinated the first Geodesign workshop in Ireland in 2015 with Prof. Carl Steinitz and Dr Hrishi Ballal, based in Mulranny Co. Mayo.
Orla also co-presents the RTÉ television documentary series Building Ireland, with preparations underway for a third series.
