The ‘Free Market’ pavilion will be installed in Kilmallock Library and Local Area Offices from Thursday, September 19th to September 30th.
Visitors are invited to take part in a series of free events aimed to stimulate debate and conversations on the future of our small towns, particularly their public realm and market places.
A programme of events will run across Thursday, Friday and Saturday, September 19th, 20th and 21st, during which people are encouraged to explore the exhibition, join in guided walking tours, attend a talk, contribute to Vox Pop recording sessions, and for younger townies we have designed a special Townie Scavenger Hunt.
The exhibition at Kilmallock library will include original architectural drawings and models from the Venice Architecture Biennale describing both the historic and contemporary conditions of towns across Ireland. Recently taken documentary and aerial photography (specially commissioned by ‘Free Market’) will be shown alongside historic photography. There will also be audio interviews, stories and sound recordings.
Original content from the Free Market Venice Biennale Pavilion will be included in the exhibition – including architectural models and drawings. These describe both the historic and current conditions of small Irish market towns as well as there possible futures.
Free Market News, which contains writings on rural towns from nearly 40 expert contributors, will be available to browse and take home.
The ‘Free Market’ team will be on hand to chat and learn about Kilmallock, as they continue to gather experiences, thoughts and ambitions for towns on each stop of the National Tour journey.
‘Free Market’ are collaborating with Kilfinane based sound designer and producer Diarmuid McIntyre of ‘Grey Heron Media’, for a one-off series of sound events on Culture Night ‘Kilmallock as it lives and breathes’ on Friday September 20th. Based in the Friars Gate Theatre from 6.45 - 9.30pm, these events will involve audience participation in the live recording and editing of a Kilmallock soundscape.
The Free Market team is also working with students from the School of Architecture University Limerick who recently studied Kilmallock. The ‘Free Market’ exhibition in Kilmallock is accompanied by a series of events, and a parallel exhibition of students’ work from the School of Architecture and Urbanism University of Limerick on their work for a new town threshold for Kilmallock
